Aziz Bassbassi

Is originally from the region of Juribga, in Morocco. He is 43 years old and he has worked in his country as a farmer, a bricklayer and a baker. Nevertheless, the conditions in his home place are so poor that it is his second journey on a dinghy.

The first time was in 2003, when he left Western Sahara and he arrived at Fuerteventura after two days. After that, he took a ship to Lanzarote in order to fly to Madrid. His final destination was Almería. It was the first place in which he found a job and he stayed there for seven years. Apart from that, he seized the changes in the cropping season to work in places such as Málaga, Alicante, Jaén and Lleida.

However, these seasons were drastically interrupted when his father died in 2018. He returned to Morocco to mourn him and to be with his family in such a difficult moment. Despite having the legal documents enabling him to work in Spain, the authorities forbade him to return. He lost the money of three plane tickets trying to return. Obstacles that got worse because of COVID-19. The final solution: going back on a dinghy again. Putting his life at risk again. All of that, just to be able to live in peace in Morocco someday with his loved ones. Or, maybe, to have the freedom of entering and leaving his country without having to be retained any more.
