GOING TO THE ROOT

People who migrate leave a gap in their places of origin. Their families can feel and touch that absence: mothers, fathers, siblings, children who cannot see the person who travelled in search of better living conditions as they used to. Their neighbourhoods and towns miss one of their own. In their circles of friends, there’s someone who is not there. The fishing nets, the hoes or the hammers are not used by the same person who used them in the past. The place he filled in the everyday life of his immediate environment is now empty.

Ir a la raíz (Going to the root) depicts the absence of the people who migrated. It deepens into their places of origin, as it approaches their families and the towns and cities from which the protagonists started their journeys. It entails to bring the stories closer, to humanise them, to empathise with them. It contributes to the understanding of the different circumstances. It means to start the journey in reverse. It implies to comprehend the absence created by the people who migrated, the impact of their departure in their near and familiar environment: what news of them reach their home, which emotions appear in a climate of constant uncertainty, how do they go through the wait…

Ir a la raíz is transformed into a metaphor of the treatment of the stories, the experiences and the life projects behind the people hidden underneath statistics and figures.
